Student Transport in Clermont-Ferrand: How to Use Public Transport

Written by:

New to Clermont-Ferrand and not sure how to get around? The local public transport network, T2C, includes a tram line and buses connecting Clermont-Ferrand with surrounding areas. You can plan your journey using the official T2C app, buy a single ticket for €1.60, or choose a discounted pass if you travel regularly. The best part? Public transport is free for everyone on Saturdays and Sundays!

1. How does public transport work in Clermont-Ferrand?

The T2C network is the main public transport system in Clermont-Ferrand and the surrounding metropolitan area. It includes tram line A and numerous bus lines, making it easier to reach the city centre, university campuses and nearby towns.

If you are travelling somewhere for the first time, you do not need to memorise all the lines. Simply use the official T2C app or the Clermoov app to find the most convenient route.

Enter your starting point and destination to check the route, departure time and connections. Before leaving, check for delays or service changes on the T2C traffic information page.

2. How much does a T2C ticket cost?

Your ticket choice depends on how often you use public transport.

Ticket or passPrice
Single journey€1.60
2 journeys€3.00
10 journeys€15.00
24-hour pass, one person€5.30
Monthly pass, under 26€28.80
Annual pass, under 26€280.00

These are the fares listed by T2C on 26 October 2026. Check the official T2C fares page before travelling in case prices change.

If you only travel occasionally, a single ticket may be enough. A 10-journey ticket can be useful if you travel several times a week, while a monthly or annual pass may suit students who regularly commute to university. The under-26 fares are based on age, not exclusively on student status. Monthly passes are valid from the first to the last day of the calendar month, so consider your travel dates before buying one.

Where can you buy a ticket?

You can buy tickets from tram-station vending machines, authorised sales outlets, the T2C online shop or the Clermoov app. You can also use a compatible contactless bank card or mobile payment service at the validators.

Buying a ticket on board a bus is possible, but costs €2 for a single journey, including the reusable contactless ticket support. Buying before boarding is generally the cheaper option.

3. How do you validate your ticket?

This is one of the most important things to remember when using T2C.

  1. Before boarding, make sure you have a valid ticket or pass.
  2. When you board a bus or tram, validate your ticket at the designated validator. If you use Clermoov, display your QR code and scan it.
  3. Validate again every time you change buses or trams, even if you are still within your ticket’s 1-hour-and-10-minute validity period.
  4. Keep your ticket or payment method available in case of an inspection.

If you pay directly with a contactless bank card, use the same card or payment device each time you board. Further validations within the 1-hour-and-10-minute validity period are treated as connections rather than new paid journeys.

Do not forget to validate your ticket even if you already bought it. An unvalidated ticket can result in a fine. You can find the full rules in the official T2C conditions.

4. A useful tip: public transport is free at weekends

Trying to save money while discovering Clermont-Ferrand? T2C is free for everyone from the first service on Saturday morning until the last service on Sunday evening, around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

During this period, you do not need to buy or validate a ticket for travel on the T2C network. This is a great opportunity to explore the city, meet friends or visit places you have not discovered yet.

Remember that the free service applies to Saturdays and Sundays, not to the entire weekend starting on Friday evening. Always check the current timetable before planning a late journey.

5. Three things to remember before your first trip

First, use the T2C app to check your itinerary and live departure times instead of relying only on Google Maps. Second, buy your ticket before boarding whenever possible, and remember to validate it at each connection. Finally, check for service disruptions before leaving, especially if you have an important class or appointment.
